Overview
Known for its cool, summer fog, rolling hills, scenic beauty and diverse culture and ethnicity, San Francisco is also one of the most visited places in the world as well as one of the most populous cities in the United States. It’s most famous landmark, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, connects San Francisco to Marin County across the Bay.
San Francisco has played an important part in American history during the California Gold Rush in 1848 when immigrants flocked into the city to seek their fortunes and try their luck. In 1906, an earthquake and subsequent fire leveled the city. Nevertheless, it has continued to thrive and grow through the Great Depression of the 30’s, through World War II and remains one of the top destinations in America.
Booking Flights
There are three San Francisco Bay area airports: San Francisco International (SFO), which is about 10 miles south of the city; Oakland International (OAK) in the East Bay, and Mineta San Jose International (SJC) in Silicon Valley. Out of the three, SFO is the most convenient for BizTechDay.
Public airport transportation is available for both SFO and Oakland since they are both connected to downtown San Francisco by the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, a subway/commuter rail service. Passengers arriving in SFO can take the free airport shuttle AirTrain to the BART station. From Oakland, BART can take passengers to the nearest station on a regular shuttle.
Directions
- From San Francisco International Airport (2 miles): Take 101 South toward San Jose. Exit Millbrae Ave. Turn left on Millbrae Ave. Turn right at the second stoplight onto Bayshore Hwy. Proceed through 4 stoplights. Hotel is on right hand side.
- From Oakland Airport (approximately 30 miles) and Points East: Take I-880 South toward San Jose. Merge onto CA-92 W toward San Mateo Br. Merge onto US-101 N toward San Francisco to the Broadway Exit. Take the Airport Blvd ramp toward Bayshore Blvd, then turn left onto Bayshore Hwy to the hotel.
- From San Jose Airport (approximately 30 miles) and Points South: Take 101 North to the Broadway Exit. Take the Airport Blvd ramp toward Bayshore Blvd, then turn left onto Bayshore Hwy to the hotel.
Ground Transportation
- Train: The Bay Area has a number of mass transit systems that you can use to get around. Aside from the BART, there’s also Amtrak which has long-distance and intercity trains, and the Caltrain.
- Bus: You can also take the bus as there are numerous bus companies that serve the area which includes GotoBus which travels to and from Los Angeles, and Greyhound.
- Taxi: You can also catch a cab as there are usually taxi stations at nearby hotels. You can also call a cab company although that mean a significant wait time.
- Car: Taking a car might be more of an inconvenience than a help, so you might want to think twice. Your biggest concern would most definitely parking because of its scarcity. Garages, although available, can be expensive.
Visa
International visitors must have a passport and a U.S. Visa to be able to enter the United States. To attend BizTechDay, you will only need a non-immigrant Visa. Visit the site of the Bureau of Consular Affairs for more information on how to get a U.S. Visa from your home country.
Weather and Dress
San Francisco has dry summers and mild winters, and temperature is moderate all-year round. October, when BizTechDay will be held, is one of the warmest months although temperature is still mild with a low of 55 F (13 C) and a high of 69 F (21 C).
San Francisco natives would advise layering clothes as the weather can dramatically change within a matter of minutes.
What to See in San Francisco
Some absolute not-to-be-missed sites:
- The Golden Gate Bridge – The most recognizable landmark in San Francisco, it spans the Golden Gate which is between San Francisco and Marin County. It is one of the most famous bridges in the U.S. and is one of the major roads in and out of the city. Also at the Golden Gate district is the Presidio, which was a military-post until it closed in 1994. You can visit the Fort Point National Historic Site. The Golden Gate Park is also a great place to visit.
- Alamo Square Park – where you can find the Painted Ladies row of Victorian houses.
- Coit Tower – a tower dedicated to the San Francisco firefighters who fought a massive fire after that 1906 earthquake. Remember to wear comfy shoes because you have to hike up a hill to get to it.
- Fisherman’s Wharf – where you can take a cruise to the Alcatraz Prison. You can also enjoy street shows, seafood, and museums.
- Chinatown – for a unique experience. There are a lot of places to eat, and places not found in a mall.
You can also visit Only in San Francisco, the Official Visitors Site for San Francisco for more information.
Looking forward to seeing you in October!
