So, what does this data mean?

When you look at the overall reach and activity, it’s Maps, eMail and Facebook which are the top 3 activities of both genders combined.

If maps are the main activity for Android users, then from a marketing perspective, location based marketing is a very viable venue to gain market share and consumer eyeballs. It’s also poised to be a $10 billion industry in five years time.

Google’s launch of the mobile browser’s homepage shortcuts and its purchase of Zagat, a local restaurant review site shows that local is where the growth and revenue is going to be.

What should you do as a business?

  • Ensure your business is found locally through mobile browsers and local content sites like Yelp and Google Local.
  • Market your business through local check-in services like Facebook Places, Foursquare and Google Local.
  • Offer incentives and localized promotions to encourage repeat business.
  • Evaluate daily deals but do analyze if it makes sense for your type of business.
  • And – don’t forget to add social media to the mix.
